Is it safe for a female to travel Africa for a volunteer program?
I'm going to Nairobi, Kenya on a volunteer project in October. Doing this project through an organized group. Family and friends are extremely discouraging!! What places I should avoid and things to be aware of. Thanks!

- yes but bring condoms just in case
- Yes its perfectly safe, I work with exchange students at the University of Nairobi who come from allover the world to teach students in slum areas during their breaks and so far all of them have had a blast, here. Just make sure you have someone to take you around who is trustworthy, do some research on the prices of things(people WILL con you if they can). Buy food from clean looking areas and if its packaged look for a KEBS(Kenya bureau of standards) sticker. Get and keep the phone numbers of Kenya Tourist Police(+254 020 2727844) just in in case you get lost or something like that. Organize your trip especially accommodation and finances before hand & travel from the airport, keep a map with you and should you be lost with no means of communication ask for directions to the nearest hotel. Most people speak English so communication shouldn't be a problem. Come to Kenya:) we could do with more people like you helping out. If you have any other concerns you can ask me id be happy to answer.
- Kenya is a very enjoyable place to visit, especially if you have a trustworthy guide. you need someone who is kenyan and trustworthy to guide you if you need directions, if you like clubbing, they'll take you to safe places. avoid removing your mobile phone(s) and other stuff like cameras, in the open street areas if you are walking on foot and without a guide, be careful not to get friendly with strangers, dont be rude to anybody, as you can get into so much trouble. generally, trust your guide.
